Why Round Rugs May Not Work
When you choose a rug you always have to give consideration to the room where the rug will go. You need to think about
1. The Color of Rug
Obviously you want a shade which complements the colors in the rest of the room. You can have a matching rug or a rug which acts as an accent color but in any case it must work well in the existing color scheme.
2. The Size of the Rug
The rug must fit well into the room in question without looking like it is too big or too small. It will look too big if it is too close to walls or furniture and too small if it seems tiny in proportion to the size of the room.
3. The Style of the Rug
If you have a southwestern style decor then southwestern style rugs will look just right but the same rugs will not work in an oriental or ultra-contemporary style room.
4. The Shape of the Rug
Having considered all the above you may not realize that the shape is important too but round area rugs look good in some places and not in others. As usual in interior design, it is a question of balance and proportion. When choosing a shape for your rug you need to look at the shape of the room. That is why a runner rug will look so good in a long hall. You would not consider adding a round rug there if you want the room to look good.
Similarly if you have a rectangular living room, or at least one which is very far from square in shape, you may be better to choose a rectangular or oval rug to suit it.
But what do you do if your room is irregular in shape (as many of our room are these days). The thing to do then is to break the room up into areas. Perhaps you have a seating area which is square in shape. The regularity of a round rug would suit this perfectly whereas your rectangular dining area would be better suited to a rectangle shape.
