Try Quinoa for a Healthy Lifestyle!

The older I get, the more I find myself realizing just how important my health is.  It was very easy for me to stay thin when I was younger.  I was a size six regardless of what I ate, and to be honest I ate pretty badly.  Fast food was the norm and I never worried about how much fat was in something. Things changed when I left my 20′s and became a mom.  Not only was I dealing with baby weight, I seemed to gain a bit of weight every year.

No matter what I tried, the scale did not seem to move.  I got lucky when I found Tosca Reno’s Eat Clean Diet Cookbook!    Eating clean has changed my view of food completely.  Rather than counting calories, I simply focus on eating as much whole healthy food as I can.

Another great things that happened to me was that I learned How to Cook Quinoa. Quinoa is a tiny seed that is most often treated like a grain in cooking.  It is an ancient food that was a dietary staple for the Incan’s.  People often referred to it as the “gold of the Inca’s” and many people believe that quinoa was the key to the strength of the Incan armies.

It has just been in the last ten years that quinoa has been widely available in the western world.  It has rapidly gained in popularity thanks to the fact that nutritional experts have called quinoa a “super food”.  Even NASA has given quinoa quite a bit of attention.  They are currently studying it for its potential as a crop to be grown in space on long term missions in the future.

The primary reason that quinoa has received so much attention is that it is very unique for a vegetarian food because it has a complete amino acid profile. This makes it a complete source of protein which is ideal for vegetarians.  Because of this, you can find many great quinoa recipes in the best vegan cookbooks.
