Tree growth and the urban environment

Irish forestry has to adhere to strict guidelines when it comes to planting trees that are near urban developments. There are also guidelines to prevent forestry from being planted too close to the banks of rivers and streams, under electricity cables, and too close to roadways. There can be stipulations and restrictions tied up with any tree planting these days. There are various different problems that are associated with planting trees and building developments. If land is being developed in order to build houses or other buildings on it, there are going to be some problems that can arise as a consequence of this is.

When a building developer initially purchases a plot of land, that piece of land will either have planning permission on it, or the developer will have to apply to the local council in order to get the said planning permission. Once this has been achieved, the plots of land that he has bought will turn out to be quite expensive. Therefore, he will want to use as much of the land as profitably as he. He will always want to build houses on land and the use of trees on his property will take a very low priority. The problem with this is that if a property developer gets the planning commission, it is highly likely that there is going to be stipulations within that planning permission to provide for the planting of a certain number of trees.

Forest Ireland does not really have that take into account these types of problems. But, if we are planting trees that are going to be nearer a roadway, we have to hold back a certain distance. Also, it is best Forest practice to plant deciduous trees along the side of any public roadway. These are generally more attractive than their coniferous counterparts. Also, keeping back a certain distance from electricity cables is just in case the trees may fall once they get older and in doing so break the cables and thus knocking out the electricity.  Also, good forest practice involves leaving forest access roadways open for future development.
