The Quick and Easy Carport
Traditionally the carport has been the structure you build when you haven’t the room to erect a garage. In many cases a carport consists of simply a roof over a concrete slab that gives the car overhead protection from the elements. The carport may be erected as a stand-alone structure or it may be attached to the house, depending on the room on your property.
The carport has started to evolve a little more with some of them become quite elaborate structures that are built as a mirror image of the house, picking up the detail work from the house to match. As part of that evolution has some side walls on one or more sides that turn it into more of a garage than ever.
For those who need a carport and want it erected as quickly as possible it is now possible to buy prefab carports that can be delivered in kit form and are simple to construct. This may be suitable for people who tend to move houses quite often and would rather keep their carport with them when they move. It may also be suitable for moving the carport to different places on the property to adjust to changing needs or weather requirements. The flexibility is key with a prefab carport.
A carport may be as big or as small as you require. For multiple car families it may be necessary to install a longer, multi-car carport so that all the cars in the household are protected. The various sizes of cars must also be taken into consideration here, too. A carport that can comfortably house the family sedan may have some problems with an RV. All of your needs should be considered, both those that are immediately apparent as well as any that are likely to crop up in the future.
Wherever possible you should attempt to blend the carport into the constructed façade of the house. There is nothing worse than coming across a house where the beauty of the home is completely destroyed by a lean-to carport that has obviously been bolted on as an afterthought.
