Safe warehouse operations

Safe warehouse operations require knowledge, training and specialized equipment. Training your forklift drivers is essential to prevent and minimize the risk of financial losses due to forklift accidents. Forklift accidents can cause millions of dollars in losses every year for America.

Forklift accidents can cause loss from physical injury, property damage, along with damage to goods. Damaged goods can occur from rollover accidents were pallet accidentally tipped over. Occasionally, faulty pallets themselves may present a risk as well. Physical injury is a very dangerous and real situation when working in a warehouse environment. Make sure your warehouse forklift drivers always wear their safety gear such as eye goggles and hardhat helmets.

Training can be done through various methods such as real-life classroom training, Internet-based training material. Make sure you choose an OSHA certified course. This should be done on an annual basis in order to keep current on your insurance obligations for your business liability insurance.

Specialized forklift equipment include side shift loading equipment, special fork rotators, and counterweight balance to forklift trucks. These tools will help you move heavy and or awkwardly balanced pallets efficiently and safely. Many accidents occur when forklift operators misjudge the center of gravity when moving loads around the warehouse.

The center of gravity is extremely important to understand even if you’re not interested in physics. Most accidents occur because loads are either too high or too heavy. Using a counterweight balance truck, can lower the center of gravity under fork lift machine. This lets you lift higher loads while minimizing the risk of accidents occurring from forklift truck rollovers.

It is important that your staff is made aware of the consequences of carelessness in your warehouse. Many times, forklift operators are young and may not have enough experience in the real world. By educating your staff, they can be taught to be careful around your warehouse. This will benefit them by preventing injury to themselves along with the risk to your physical inventory while maneuvering forklift trucks.
