Roux-En-Y
The word was patterned after Cesar Roux’s name. If you grab a pen and a piece of paper, and start drawing a diagram, you will notice that the letter “Y” can be formed. This is often used to describe the concept behind Roux-en-y. It is a surgical term often encountered when doing the so-called Roux operations and can be applied in operations related to treating obesity, stomach cancer, and treatment of bile duct obstruction. Let’s talk about its connection with obesity and bariatric surgery or weight loss operations. In a world which is soon to be overcrowded and overpopulated with people who are constantly plagued with problems involving excess weight, different methods of losing those extra pounds are being made available for all men and women. They juggle their food choices with extreme care for fear of adding another set of pounds. Since there are a lot of surgical options available for those who are overweight, majority of these people are pursuing these operations. However, it has been found by doctors that these procedures have side effects such as decrease in calcium absorption and increased risk in developing kidney stones. These effects, however, are not seen in operations which use Roux-en-y. Since a Y shape can be made if one would trace or put together the surgical connections which go around part of the bowel, weight loss can be acquired with less risk but great efficiency. If this would be applied to weight loss operations, small amounts of food would pass through the small intestine thereby resulting to a dramatic loss in weight. However, the patient may experience problems in bowel movement, development of iron deficiency, and other complications. Roux-en-y is not a common term which can be explained as simple as possible by someone who is far from being a doctor or having little knowledge about surgical procedures.
