Installing A 12v Inverter On A Boat

If you’re not familiar with what a 12v inverter is, let me take just a second and bring you up to speed before we continue.  A 12 volt inverter is a device that takes the battery power that you get from your boat battery which is 12 volts of direct current and steps it up to 120 volts of alternating current electricity.  Why would you want something like this?  Well, as it turns out there are many reasons that you might like to have a 12v inverter installed on your boat.  You will likely have a couple of batteries on your boat.  One will likely be a deep cycle trolling motor battery and the other one to be a starting battery for starting the engine.  The power inverter should be connected to the deep cycle trolling motor battery.

If you have a power inverter  installed on your boat, you will be able to plug in standard household appliances into the inverter just like you would do at home.  This may not have many practical applications if all you have is a small fishing boat or a ski boat but if you have a boat that has a small cabin in it for sleeping, it would be really handy.

If you are spending  any amount of time sleeping on your boat, it would be really handy to be able to plug in common household devices like your laptop charger, or your cell phone charger.  It would also be nice to have a television with a DVD player so that you can watch movies while you’re out on water.  With a 12 volt inverter installed on your boat, you can do all of these things.

If you are going to install one of these power inverters on your boat, it’s a good idea to get one that is designed for marine use.  Xantrex is one company that makes power inverters specifically for use on boats.  They are not too expensive and they are quite easy to install.  If you don’t already have a power inverter on your boat, I would suggest doing it.  After having one of these handy gadgets, you will wonder why you didn’t have won all along.
