Improve Your Guitar Tone With New Cables

Your guitar cables are like the nervous system in your body, they carry all of the vital information between the organs (guitar, amp, effects).  Cheap guitar cables are like a damaged and slow moving nervous system that is going to have trouble getting your signal from one place to another without taking on interference.  In this post I want to show you why improving your cables will improve your tone, and how to shop for them on a budget.

Crappy guitar cables are made from cheap materials that won’t do their job, move your signal from the pickups to the amp.  They are prone to interference from outside sources, like power lines and the wiring of the place that you’re playing, and the cheap materials struggle to transmit signal.  The core of a guitar cable is the key to its quality.  Ones that are made from cheap alloys will not be able to transmit the signal without losing a lot of it along the way, the most high end cables (for recording studios) are made from silver and copper.  The high end materials do an incredible job of getting signal from one point to another without any loss.

Another thing to keep in mind is that your signal and cables are only as strong as their weakest link.  Which means that if you have bad pedal or rack unit cables all of the work that you’re doing for good tone is going to be affected.  This may mean that you settle for a set of cables that is less expensive for the sake of upgrading everything at once.

How do you upgrade cables without spending a fortune?  Buy them online!  I’m sure that you’ve wondered how Guitar Center can have such incredible sales on all of their equipment, and thought “how do they still make money?”  The thing is the the markup on music equipment is incredibly high, so they can afford to put such deep discounts on everything.  This saves you money online because vendors here don’t put that high markup because they don’t have an actual store to pay for.  Shop online and you’ll save a ton of cash on your cables.
