How Easy Is the Vending Machine Business?
What is the #1 reason that most people end up failing in vending? Without a doubt it has to be unrealistic views of the vending business combined with unobtainable goals. Too many people get into vending thinking it’s as simple as buying some machines, placing them and then running around collecting money all day long. If this is your view of the vending machine business, you’ll most likely end up being vending road kill. Unfortunately you’ll see a lot of businesses shilling vending to people who don’t know any better. If you do hope to eventually have a vending route that allows you to be your own boss and quit your job, then the best thing you can do to assure this future is to have realistic expectations about vending. It’s good and normal to be overly enthusiastic when first starting out, but eventually this enthusiasm will fade and you’ll be left with the hard cold reality of vending.
Most people when they first start out usually start part time. This is one of the things that makes vending so attractive, the ability to start part time with very little money. The problem with starting part time and with very little money is that it can then take years to build up a route to the point that it can replace your job. A lot of people fail to anticipate exactly how long it can take to grow a route. Not only is it time consuming, but emotionally this growing process can be very hard as well. At times it can seem like you’re spinning your wheels while getting very little traction.
The best way to get a feel for vending is to just jump right in, but to do it on the cheap. I recommend buying a couple used vending machines, placing them and servicing them for a few months. This allows you to get a quick cheap education on vending while you see if it is a good business for you.
