Realize that more than twenty-five years ago corporations abandoned the responsibility to save and invest for their employees’ retirement. In those days, there was more of a paternalistic attitude about caring for employees. That attitude came with a financial cost that was simply not sustainable. In the wake of that reality, the defined contribution plan, more commonly know to us all as the 401k plan, was born.

The cost to employees was that they became solely responsible for both saving and investing for their own retirement. Even if employers match a portion of your contribution, it is still up to you to direct the investments. The other consequence of the fall of the defined benefit plan, the old Pension Plan, was the creation of a vendor called a 401k plan provider. In addition to providing the 401k investment platform, they also provide a variety of educational materials for employees. Unfortunately, personalized, one-on-one, face-to-face investment advice is the exception rather than the rule.
