Have you heard of these direct channel sales? Do you happen to know what they mean?? You don’t? Strange, let me help you out a little bit. Direct channel sales can mean a few things actually (they just want to complicate things as much as possible): When someone calls something a “channel” it means fulfillment of orders through distribution or a reseller. Maybe it’s both. For example, lets say that I sell oatmeal raisin cookies out of my home. A local restaurant has somehow recognized that my cookies are super delicious, so they decide to order so many through me. Then they start selling them under my name and we become partners. They directly channel sales for me. They tell people who I am, and where to get my cookies etc. Now, I could leave all of my sales up to that restaurant, or I can manage the sales by myself, or it could be a combination of the two.

Another example of this is when my aunt goes to Nordstrom Rack and buys tons of designer jeans and then sells them on eBay for her own profit. She is directly channeling sales for the designer jeans right? Wrong. This is a false example to see if you really understood the concept or not. (How did you do? Am I making any sense?) The reason why this is not an example of direct channel sales is because my aunt is giving no business to True Religion or 7s for All Mankind, or for Nordstrom Rack or Nordstrom. They have no understanding that she will sell those jeans after she buys them. Granted, Nordstrom Rack is very aware of the side businesses which have accumulated. It is hard not to notice the same ladies on stock day buying twenty or thirty Diane Von Furstenberg dresses. But my aunt is taking people who otherwise would have bought the jeans wholesale at Nordstrom or semi-discounted at Nordstrom Rack and having them purchase the jeans from her at a discounted price. Technically, Nordstrom Rack is still benefiting because she is buying jeans from them, but she is up selling their products in order to make money. If my aunt did not sell those jeans on Ebay, I would bet that Nordstrom Rack would have greater profits. Direct channel sales is when two companies partner and help each other out. My aunt it taking business away from another, bigger company.

So, now you may be confused. Channeling sales for people is basically when two businesses get together and help each other out. For example, if your business is really good at marketing, and mine is good at sales, we can team up, I can send you things to market, and I can focus on your sales. Effectively we are both working for each other, but only to a greater capacity. It is the fusion of companies for the greater good of both.

There are few other steps that can be involved. Such as, the distributor can sell my product directly to the consumer, or there can be another middle man. The distributor could sell it to the reseller, and then the reseller sells it to the consumer (think of the chain my aunt’s ebay business uses). So now you’re probably wondering, what is the point? Why would I care about direct channel sales, right? Well, I understand your conundrum because that’s exactly how I felt at first. But directing sales is not just about making a profit, it is about streamlining and strengthening your company and your companies time. How Times have Changed on the Factory Floor

I don’t know if you have ever paid a visit to a factory where consignments of boxes or other packages are palleted, wrapped and strapped before being shipped off to customers or distribution centers. Or maybe you have worked in such a place? If not, it’s worth paying a visit to see how the machinery works.

I visited such a factory just recently and had my first experience of seeing a semi automatic pallet wrapper up close. If you are unfamiliar with the environment, watching wrapping machines and strapping machines in action can be quite fascinating.

Factories these days are not like they were thirty years ago when I left school and spent a couple of months working in a plastics production plant. The whole industrial environment has changed beyond recognition. Nowadays, factory floors are generally much cleaner, quieter environments. Health and safety laws introduced of the past couple of decades ensure that noise levels to not go beyond a certain level and that dust and other unpleasant environmental factors are kept at a minimum.

Not only that, but so much of what happens in factories now is automated, or at least semi-automated. One machine can now do the job of a hundred men, especially if robotics are used.

This can be seen quite clearly when you watch how pallet wrapping and strapping machines work, for example. Generally, pallets are moved around by automated belts, trucks, carts and conveyors, and are wrapped efficiently using purpose-designed wrapping machines.

For me, not having visited a factory for thirty years, when I saw the whole process it came as quite a shock how quiet, efficient and automated the process was. Unlike when I left school looking for unskilled laboring work, I probably wouldn’t even be able to get a job in a factory now without good qualifications in machine operations. How time have changed!
