Used drum sets can pose a significant advantage to any beginning drummer who is learning to play the drums. When you are a beginning drummer who is just learning, it is still important to have a quality drum set where you will be happy with it’s tone, however you shouldn’t invest too much right off the bat, because your tastes in drums will change over time as you learn to play the drums.

I personally believe that there are used drum sets out there that are just as good as many new ones, and unlike many other items, the simple fact that something is used when it comes to drums doesn’t mean that it is any worse at all than a new drum kit. As long as the previous owner of the drums took good care of them, then you should be completely fine to purchase the drums used, and they will probably sound just as good as new, once you change the drum heads.

Many beginning drum students who are learning drums feel that they need to have the highest quality yamaha drum kit or pearl drum kit right off the bat when they start playing the drums, but that is simply not the case. Analyzing Your Audition Sides

If you’re a brand new actor or an accomplished professional, you likely feel some nerves when you go an audition. It’s a stressful activity, trying to evoke real emotion in an empty room while you stand in from of a casting director and their assistants. Thankfully, by being able to quickly analyze the sides you are given when you check in, you will be able to center yourself, focus on the work you need to do, and get yourself cast.

When you are first show up for your sides audition, you need to be able to read through the scene you are given and quickly get an idea of the main emotions that your character is portraying. Look at the words they are saying, and also try to figure out the relationship between them and the other character in the scene. If this feels like a lot, try to choose some broad emotions first – anger, happiness, fear – and then try to hone in on something a little more specific. Most likely the director will have some ideas and ask you to try a couple different things, so it’s no sweat if you can’t get too specific.

Also, try to keep yourself calm. In the book Sanford Meisner on Acting, Meisner teaches the class to drain the emotion away from themselves first, and then bring in the emotions that they need for their character. This is an excellent way to look at it. You need to clear your head, calm yourself, and only then try to channel the emotions you want the character to show. If you don’t, you can easily give off a lot of extra signal and emotion that has nothing to do with the character, and confuse the director. And a confused director will not cast you.

Auditioning is hard, but by clearing your mind and delving into the part you are given, you should be able to come up with a basic point of view to show off to the director when it’s your turn. Experience with auditioning will make this easier, as will practicing with other texts ahead of time. Break a leg!

One of the most frequent questions I get at the library is whether I have any reading recommendations. I usually answer this question with a question: “What do you like to read?” or maybe “Can you tell me a title that you have loved?” More often than not the response is that they read anything. And yet, when I suggest that finding some great autobiographies to read might give them a new area to explore, they often think that is the most boring suggestion on earth.

It could be. It really could be, but it depends on who wrote the book and who is reading it. An autobiography–interchangeable with the term memoir–is a non-fiction book written in the first person about someone’s own experiences. If you wrote a book about what you did during the last year, that would be an autobiography. Now, whether or not it was a great autobiography would be up to your readers.

The easiest way to find good memoirs to read is to understand your own reading tastes. What subjects interest you? Well, an autobiography written by someone who had similar interests to yours might not be a boring read. If you want to be an inventor, the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin might fascinate you.

On the other hand, if you hate children’s literature, you could probably skip a memoir about Dr. Seuss without missing too much.

If you were an English major struggling to write a study about a famous author, I guarantee you that you would identify with Geoff Dyer’s memoir, Out of Sheer Rage.

An interesting experiment can be to look at yourself and imagine that there is a book out there that tells the story of your life. Now pretend a librarian like me is reading it, trying to determine which subjects apply to your story. Anyone who has ever lived who has subjects that overlap with your own might be worth checking out.

Above all, I would urge you to forget the idea that any particular genre of book is boring. There are boring books in every category, but that is often due to the interests of the reader, not the author. Keep searching and you’ll find something that will captivate you. Even in the sometimes-dull world of autobiographies.
