An Introduction To Vision Therapy

Vision therapy or visual training as it is also known, is a field that uses non-surgical methods and corrective medical and natural techniques to help improve deteriorating vision. There are many different types of vision therapy procedures. They can be categorized into two major groups.

The first group is classified as orthoptic vision therapy. Orthoptic therapy deals with binocular vision disorders, for example diplopia and strabismus. Optometrists and occupational therapists mainly apply this type of therapy.

The second group of procedures falls under behavioral therapy (or developmental optometry), which is primarily used by specialist optometrists. This type of visual therapy deals with visual impairments that are associated with problems with concentration and attention.

Visual therapy is also used to help people that suffer from eyestrain and headaches that are related to difficulties in vision. Some professional athletes also benefit from the procedures of visual training as it can be used to improve their peripheral vision out on the playing field.

Some optometrists have used the techniques within vision correction therapy to address visual impairments that may come in the way of learning and reading. However, optometrists have not claimed that there is a clear link to the advantages of this type of therapy to overcoming learning abilities.

The therapy is essentially a collection of vision exercises that are done under the supervision of an optometrist. The exercises are specifically designed to suit the individual needs of each patient. This way, the therapy is customized for each individual’s issues.

Visual therapy incorporates a range of eye exercises and other techniques hence require strict controls to successfully use and gain from the therapy. There may also be a need to use medical tools in conjunction with natural eye exercises so it can only be conducted under the supervision of a qualified doctor. An examination of the patient’s vision is necessary beforehand to begin on the program.
