A Look at Garden Pond Lights

No garden would be complete without the presence of water. While most gardeners use water to breathe life into their plants, some create beautiful garden ponds to showcase water in its natural form. Some of the more elaborate garden ponds look like they have been plucked out of the forest. Interesting fish of varying colors swim about in the water and are a pleasure to watch. Decorative underwater plants and floating lily pads are so different yet so similar to the plants we tend to on land. To fully enjoy these water features, a full set of outdoor lights is necessary.

Pond lights are designed to illuminate a pond both inside and out. You may be wondering how a light can be put within the water without causing electrocution. Special underwater spotlights with waterproof casings are available which can be set inside the water. The lights shine up from the pond’s floor onto the plants, fish and rocks. The lights also have the bonus effect of shining on the rippling water surface. For a dramatic effect, colored plastic discs are available with some packages that can be interchanged to alter the beam’s color.

Now that you know the basics about underwater lights, let’s move onto dry ground. The outside of a pond can be filled with many structures too, most prominently a flowing water feature. Pointing an above ground spotlight onto a waterfall is a common practice. The contrast between the light and shadows perfectly accents the rock features which the water flows from. It also allows the moving water to sparkle amid the light. Other items to accent include large plants and rocks. Generally, pond owners install the garden lighting fixtures with the initial construction of their pond. However, they can be installed after-the-fact with careful planning. The wires can be routed under the decorative rock so they won’t be seen.
